Fukushima disaster

Fukushima disaster-2011

The tragic Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in Japan has provoked global debate about the rationality of nuclear power.

Political Environment

The 2011 earthquake was the most powerful ever recorded in Japan

The arising controversies from the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power Plant and subsequent handling measures can be attributed to structural problems in Japan's postwar system. Japan's power elite is steeped in a political and cultural tradition. On the government's side, politicians and bureaucrats have joined forces with Tokyo Electric Power Company, Japan's biggest utility, to build dozens of nuclear power plants, driven by political considerations such as moving away from energy dependence. The Japanese government wasn't able to mediate the economy because of the huge amount of money it had invested. Dumping the sewage into the sea is obviously the best option for the Japanese government to save money.

Local Residence Effect

Some Japanese scholars have pointed out that the ocean around Fukushima is not only a part of the Pacific Ocean and the global ocean but also a fishing ground for local fishermen. The discharge of nuclear sewage into the ocean will affect fish migration, pelagic fisheries, human health, and ecological security. Therefore, thus there will be no more fresh fish for trading, we can expect an uplift of the unemployment rate in Fukushima and boycotts/protests in the following years.

Moreover, it will also lead to a decrease in exporting dry aquatic products and frozen aquatic products, such as sardines and seaweed and will also strike the sushi culture. Many Japanese restaurants abroad choose to import sea products from Japan to pursue a traditional and local taste of Japanese food.  However, if the sea is polluted by nuclear sewage, there is a high chance that they will stop importing from Japan and start importing more from other coastal countries, due to the low quality of products that Japan will own. This issue is by no means only a domestic issue in Japan, but an international issue involving global marine ecology and environmental security.

Harm to Human Beings

The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean among the five oceans, and Japan's discharge of nuclear wastewater into the Pacific Ocean poses three major hazards to mankind.

First of all, in terms of food, when nuclear wastewater is released into the sea, marine fish will be the first to be affected, then marine organisms can not only absorb and accumulate radioactive substances from the environment through metabolism, and hence becoming carriers and transmitters of radioactive substances, but also cause human body to be influenced by a variety of radioactive isotopes in seawater through enrichment effect. These harmful substances will gradually accumulate in the human body and cause diseases like chronic radiation sickness, damage to blood organs, endocrine system and nervous system, and inducing cancer and genetic mutation.

Japan's discharge of nuclear sewage is not only harmful to the global environment, but also affects the global economy. The first unlucky group to discharge nuclear sewage into the sea is the Japanese people, especially those who make a living by fishing.

Because when the nuclear sewage is discharged, the most seriously polluted is the Japanese waters, radioactive substances will stay in the fish body, human consumption of these seafood will cause damage to the human body.

Then, the demand for Sea of Japan products will be greatly reduced. At the same time, the fishermen will not frequently go into the sea for their own physical safety, resulting in the reduction of supply.

Not only in Japan, but also the most distinctive Japanese product is seafood.

Once in this event, the foreign demand for the Sea of Japan products will also decline, and the export of Japanese goods will decrease, leading to the imbalance of the balance of payments, and the number of imports is greater than the number of export products, which may lead to a trade deficit

Environmental Effect

After Japan discharged nuclear wastewater into the ocean, due to the fluidity of seawater, nuclear wastewater will affect the entire Asia-Pacific region. This includes the United States, China, Russia, and even the entire Southeast Asia. It may cause an ecological and environmental disaster.

When seawater is polluted, the crisis of freshwater resources will further increase, and according to the effect of ocean currents, nuclear sewage will gradually affect the waters around neighboring countries.

The most important thing is that nuclear radiation can kill cells and have a mutagenic effect: cell carcinogenesis or genetic mutations. This results in biological malformations.

The second is the enrichment effect of the food chain, non-degradable harmful substances will eventually be enriched to the top of the food chain. These harmful substances are difficult to be degraded, and finally may enter the human body, triggering genetic mutations and various diseases in the body. Thus, affecting human beings themselves.

Experts have said that at present, human beings still lack the technology to effectively dispose of artificial radioactive pollutants entering the ocean, and can only reduce the concentration of pollution through the attenuation of radioactive materials themselves and the dilution and diffusion of marine water bodies. As a result, when the ocean water quality is severely polluted, fish may eat harmful substances in nuclear wastewater, which accumulate in the fish's body. If humans consume these seafood products, it will have a great negative impact on health.
