WRITING AND BOUNDARY

ABOUT THE THEME

Themed as "Writing and Boundary", the 6th Kunming Art Biennale sets to explore continued derivation and expansion of calligraphy in the contemporary era and to explore possibilities in contemporary transition of traditional Chinese art. With the proposition of "Writing and Boundary", we will change the state of "aphasia" for calligraphy in all kinds of art biennales both in China and in other parts of the world, and reiterate the value and significance of calligraphy in contemporary arts via discussion and reflection on the boundary issue so as to further discover the possibilities in contemporary transitioning of conventional Chinese forms of art.

Under the overarching theme of "Writing and Boundary", calligraphy is no longer viewed as a cultural heritage, but incorporated into a generalized writing phenomenon with vitality.

From a perspective of writing, in direction of critical thinking that clashes with the traditions and impulse that transcends the boundary, we will be able to reflect upon ourselves and then overhaul the repetition, imitation and solidification in conventional calligraphy exhibition. In the contemporary culture system, an experimental dialogue emerging from knowledge and practice will roll out on calligraphy to realize interconnected transformation between ancient and modern times.

In its acceptance of conventions, calligraphy is also unleashing and creating things. When incorporated into a more generalized concept of writing, calligraphy is not any more contained within the previous boundary.

Writing is a course where mankind leaves prints on life, and also a result created by life. Both the classic art forms and untamed primitive ones in the long course of writing history will transcend the boundary and inter-connect the semantics under a concept of writing. Despite that calligraphy has the most important presence in traditional Chinese writing with extremely substantive cultural accumulation, it has been increasingly trapped in a dilemma of aphasia in the social, art and cultural contexts. In the meantime, the Chinese modern and contemporary arts, subject to impact and enlightenment of globalization, have started to look for experimental paths and models independent from others. It's more than obvious that understanding on writing is not any more simply restricted to classical inheritance, and has become new forms, methods and rules of higher complexity deeply influenced by technologies and ideologies.

When the world is reshaped by digital technologies, internet has become a key medium of modern communication and transformed experience of contemporary arts as a global arena for self-expression and debates on current topics. But what art sustains is more than war, pandemic and climate crisis. It is a paradox of men under increasing pressure, both physically and mentally, in a consolidated spatiotemporal structure in the context of Anthropocene. New life style and technology environment also prompts updates and expansion of writing concepts. Faced with potential fundamental discrepancies in understanding writing art from heterogeneous cultures, cross-cultural confrontation is inevitable. But that will help us back-track and adjust the growth strategies of traditions, which will help probe into contemporaneity of writing. As the western modernism has mitigated the Chinese traditional writing forms as a cross-cultural art practice, writing is faced with opportunities of re-growth. When traditional practice forms are insufficient to express complexity of contemporary cultural life, rediscovering possibility of contemporary transformation in conventional arts is unavoidable.

This exhibition looks into the dilemma and opportunities that conventional culture experiences in the contemporary era from a perspective of calligraphy in order to grow and build the future of the Chinese main culture. "Boundary" in the context of this exhibition has two-fold meanings: first, based on extension from calligraphy to writing concept, artists must be engaged in writing art of greater contemporaneity, and even discover and create other artistic forms and ways of thinking from a writing concept; and second, interaction amongst disciplines will unfold a metaphor of boundary in rhetorical sense to find differentiation in categorization and classification. So the Biennale calls for wide discussions among artists, art critics, theorists, philosophers, historians, anthropologists and academics from diversified areas on how to break the discipline "boundary" and review the topic "Writing and Boundary".

This Exhibition will display the exploration and creation of current practitioners on writing art in four sessions including "Inheritance and Development", "Modern Experiment", "Intercultural Connectivity", and "Out-of-Bounds Growth". A seminar will be held to touch upon multiple topics and focus on varied phenomenon on writing art in and outside of the domain to look into the spiritual core and explore more possibilities in writing and future arts.
